Roderick Phipps-Kettlewell
Director of Music

I joined the Valley staff in October 2016. Prior to this I have worked in countless other organizations, including churches. I have been successful in my career by being able to see new possibilities and leading these possibilities to realities. I am excited to do the same here at Valley.

I have a very musically-inclined educational background, which includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Musicology and Musical Analysis from the University of Southampton in England. I also have a Master’s Degree in Piano Accompaniment from Juilliard School of Music in New York, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies from Guildhall School of Music and Dram in London. I use my educational experiences to help teach others how to communicate deeply through music. I am a big believer in making a difference in the world through art.

My wife, Marilene, and I have an adult daughter, Miranda. When I'm not creating music, you might find me hiking in the woods, visiting museums, attending theater and concerts or just sitting quietly reading poetry. Or — you just may find me on the squash court: I just happen to be a two-time state doubles champion!

We are part of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) denomination.

We were officially organized on May 20, 1951 when Golden Valley and the surrounding suburbs were first growing in the post-war building boom.

The original chapel, now the Cornerstone Room, was built in 1952.

The Fellowship Hall was added in 1957.

The current sanctuary was added in 1965.

The Education wing was added in 1988.

The current sanctuary was built with space for an organ which took over 40 years to arrive. Read more about the history of our organ.

Valley Church currently has almost 500 members.

Our neighborhood in Golden Valley is experiencing a resurgence of young families.
