Thursday, August 8, 2024 · 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
The third session in the Golden Valley DEIC Commission’s Hate Has No Home Here series. Everyone is welcome!
Most of us either have an LGBTQ+ person in our family or know someone who is gender ‘nonconforming’ or transgender. Nevertheless, fear and hatred towards the transgender and gender nonconforming community is at an all-time high in the United States. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), roughly 515 anti-LGBTQ bills have been proposed across the US in 2024, with many specifically targeting transgender and gender nonconforming people and their existence.
Beyond legislation, transphobia is found in literature, schools, bathrooms, sports, healthcare, and personal acts of aggression and harassment. With Minnesota becoming a Trans Refuge State, it is important to have ongoing conversations and an understanding of the experiences of the transgender and gender nonconforming community, along with strategies to combat the hate and bigotry of transphobia.
Join the third session of the Hate Has No Home Here on Transphobia in the United States to learn more about this issue. Our speakers for this event will lead us in an understanding of what it means to be gender ‘nonconforming’ or transgender and how we can be more welcoming and inclusive in our community. We will also hear and discuss the barriers faced by people in the LGBTQ+ community.
When: August 8th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30
Location: Brookview Golden Valley, Wirth Lake Room
Speakers are: Ellie Krug and Nicki Hangsleben
